As you know, a parent/guardian is the most influential teacher in a child's life - especially when it comes to money. And our goal is to help you raise money savvy kids by providing you with some resources and information that will help your children learn the basics of personal finance in a way that is fun, practical and of lasting impact.
But first, let us tackle the most commonly asked question of “Why children need to learn about money”. After all, “they are just children…”
Well, the truth is that things have changed a lot since you and I were kids. If you think back in time to the simplicity of life when you were growing up, our parents and grandparents saved for what they wanted, and if the money was not available, they simply did not buy the item.
Today, the 21st century provides such easy access to debt via extremely easy access to credit cards, loans and various buy-now-pay-later deals. Children no longer seem to see cash being spent, people are spending more than they earn and borrowing heavily to maintain their lifestyles. And sadly, statistics show that our children are going down the same path.
As a result, it is becoming increasingly important to ensure that children understand basic money concepts and develop money management habits that will help them avoid some of the financial pitfalls out there.
Teaching children about money matters, financial discipline and equipping them to make wise choices as they get older is just as important as numeracy, literacy, knowledge of the world, road safety and topics such as the danger of speaking to strangers.
And the sooner this financial education starts, the better! A child’s money habit starts when they understand that money gets them what they want, and if they’re anything like mine, that’s from about ages 4 to 5.
It's never too early to teach kids the right way to handle money! At MoneySmartWorld, our goal is to make the process of teaching your children about money as easy as possible.
