Personal Finance/Money Management Lesson Plans

Teaching Personal Finance - Money and the Exchange of Money: a lesson plan based on the financial capability curriculum for Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4 students. It aims to get your students talking about money (i.e., what it is, where they get it from, what they do with it, different forms of money, what they think of it etc).

Teaching Personal Finance - Where Money Goes: a lesson plan based on the financial capability curriculum for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 students which asks them to think about what money is spent on. It gets them to recognise household expenses and regular financial commitments like rents and mortgages etc.

Teaching Personal Finance - Budgeting for Key Stage 2: a lesson plan used to teach key stage 2 pupils real life basic personal finance concepts and important fundamental budgeting skills.

Teachers, if you would like to offer more personal finance lessons in line with the PSHE: Financial Capability and Economic Wellbeing curriculum in your school, check the MoneySmart: Money Management Guides for the Classroom. Developed in partnership with teachers and tested in schools, we offer separate key stage specific resources that offer full coverage of the PSHE personal finance and financial capability curriculum in a way that is easy for you to teach and time efficient. It comes with all you need for your lessons (i.e., lesson plans that include teaching scripts, activity sheets, presentation slides, assessment tests & more), so you don’t need to be a financial guru or spend ages looking for material to support your lesson plans…

Money Management Activities

Budgeting for teens (Key Stages 3 and 4): Applicable to all teenagers and those in Key Stage 3 and 4, this activity encourages teenagers to start taking control of their money by budgeting and having a savings plan. It includes a MoneySmart Spend Tracking sheet and provides step by step instructions on how to create a budget that works. Teenagers that have used this soon learn that, with a savings plan, budget and healthy dose of patience, their buying power actually increases! It can be used to support lessons on personal finance and budgeting.

Will you have enough for university? (Key Stages 3 and 4): Appropriate for Key Stages 3 and 4, this is a great resource for helping teenagers understand the cost associated with university, the effect of compound interest over time, the benefits of keeping track of what they spend their money on and getting into the habit of saving some of their money. This can be used to supplement a lesson on Savings and Investments, and given out as a handout.

Making money lessons Fun and teaching financial capability in KS1

This resource is an online page flipping book (great for story time) that teaches children aged 5-8 about setting financial goals, how money is earned and working together as a team to achieve their goal, in a fun and engaging way. This is achieved through the adventures of a group of friends known as the MoneySmart Gang. It is a great one for interactive whiteboards, and has questions at the end which help to reinforce the key lessons being learnt.
